Listed
below are some frequently asked
questions about Pack 406 and Cub
Scouts in general:
Q. How is the Pack organized?
A.
The Pack consists of several Dens.
Each Den consists of about 8 to 12
boys, all of the same age group. Boys
in 1st Grade are called
Tiger Cubs; 2nd Graders are
Wolf Cubs; 3rd Graders are
Bear Cubs; and our 4th and
5th Grade boys are Weblos
Scouts.
Each Den is led
by at least two adult volunteers who
have boys as members of that Den. They
decide on the activities that the Den
will be performing during the year.
While there are usually two leaders
per den, there can be more, and the
other parents help out with various
activities.
The
Pack is made up of the various Dens.
We expect to have about 60 scouts in
the Pack this year. The Pack is a
member of the Glacier Ridge District
of the Moraine Trails Council, which
is headquartered in Butler, PA.
Q. What kinds of activities do the scouts participate
in?
A. The Tiger
Dens conduct various activities,
including field trips to the dairy,
the police station, the vet, etc. The
older boys get more into knot tying
and skills training. Depending on Den
preferences, some of the boys go on
hikes or even an overnight campout.
The
Pack sponsors several activities
during the year, including the
Spacewood Derby, a Pittsburgh Penguin
hockey game, the Pinewood derby, a
Pirates baseball game, and of course
summer overnight and day camps.
Q. How often do the Dens meet?
A.
Most Dens meet two or three times a
month, depending on the leaders and
parents preferences.
Q. How often does the Pack meet?
A.
The Pack comes together as a whole
once every month, September through
May. This gives us an opportunity to
make recognition awards, discuss
future Pack activities and engage in
special awards and presentations.
Q. Where do the Dens meet?
A.
Most Dens meet at the Cranberry
Community Center (Municipal Building)
or a church. On occasion, they may
meet in a Den Leader’s home.
Q. Where does the Pack meet?
A.
Our Pack meets on the fourth Monday of
every month, in the cafeteria at Rowan
Elementary School on Rowan Road. We
will begin at 7:00 PM and conclude by
about 8:00 PM. Please plan to join us
for our first meeting, on September
30, when we will explain more details
about our Pack.
There
will be no Pack meeting in December
because of the holidays. Instead we
usually attend a Pittsburgh Penguin
game as a Pack.
Our
last pack meeting for the school year
is our Tiger Cub Graduation party
(although all scouts are welcome!) and
will be on May 19, 2001. The location
is yet to be determined.
Q. Is parent participation allowed?
A.
Yes! Not only is it allowed, we
strongly encourage parent involvement.
We have found that a high degree of
parent participation in our activities
makes for a more meaningful experience
for the scouts. This is an opportunity
for you to share your time, skills,
knowledge and experiences with our
boys, as they develop into young men.
And you’ll have a ton of fun to
boot!
Q. What kind of uniform is required?
A.
The Tiger Cubs wear a bright colorful
tee shirt that proudly proclaims them
to be Tiger Cub Scouts. They may also
wear the matching Tiger Cub cap. The
older boys wear a full uniform, which
includes a blue shirt (Webelos Scouts
may wear the khaki shirt), cap and
scarf. Pants are also available, but
are not required. We ask that the
scouts wear their uniforms to all Pack
meetings and other Pack activities.
The individual dens decide whether
scouts should wear uniforms to den
meetings.
Q. Where can we get a uniform?
A.
Uniforms are available at Council
headquarters in Butler (724-287-6791),
and at the Allegheny Council
headquarters at Flag Plaza in downtown
Pittsburgh (near the civic arena). We
will also ask our Pack members to
bring any used clothing that they wish
to sell or donate to our first pack
meeting in September.
Q. What does the Pack spend its money on?
A.
The Pack provides a budget to each Den
to underwrite the costs of most of
their activities. In addition, the
Pack purchases all of the awards
(patches and pins) that the scouts
earn during the year. We also are
prepared to underwrite the cost of
attending summer resident camp or day
camp for a few scouts that would
otherwise not be able to attend.
Q. How does the Pack raise Funds?
A.
We receive limited funding from the
United Way of Butler County, through
the Cranberry Township Community
Chest. Please contact Cubmaster Jim
Willard if you are interested in
utilizing the United Way’s donor
option to earmark contributions to the
Pack. Our annual Pack dues (projected
to be about $25 per scout) also
provide some of our monies.
We
have one primary fund-raiser during
the year – the Trailsend Popcorn
sales. This event provides most of the
funding for Pack and Den activities.
It also allows us to keep Pack dues to
a minimum. You will be receiving more
information about our popcorn sales at
the September 30th Pack
meeting, including prizes and awards
that the scouts can earn. We encourage
each scout to participate in this
program not only to raise funds, but
also for the negotiating,
salesmanship, and presentation skills
they will learn.
